Inside the Cabinets: Pull-Outs and Fittings That Earn Their Keep

Two kitchens can have identical cabinet boxes, identical doors, and identical counters, and one of them will be a pleasure to use while the other quietly annoys you every day. The difference is almost never the cabinetry you can see. It is what is fitted inside it.
Cabinet interiors are where a kitchen budget produces the most daily return, and where homeowners most often economise because the showroom conversation is all about door styles and finishes. Here is what is actually worth specifying.
Drawers Beat Doors, Nearly Always
If you take one thing from this: specify deep drawers instead of base cabinets with doors and a fixed shelf. Not for the sink cabinet, which needs its plumbing, but everywhere else.
The reason is simple mechanics. A base cabinet with a door requires you to open the door, crouch, and reach into a dark box, and whatever is at the back is effectively lost. A drawer brings the entire contents out to you at waist height where you can see all of it. The same cubic space holds more, and all of it is reachable.
This is the upgrade homeowners mention most often afterwards, and it costs less than people assume, because it is a construction choice rather than a gadget.
The Fittings That Genuinely Earn Their Place
- A waste and recycling pull-out beside the sink or the prep zone. Two bins on a slide, hidden behind a door. This single item removes the freestanding bin from your kitchen floor and it is the fitting we would specify first in any kitchen.
- Deep drawers for pots and pans, placed beside the range with heavy-duty runners rated for the weight, and pegboard dividers so a stack does not collapse into a jumble.
- A cutlery and utensil drawer with proper dividers, sized to the drawer rather than a plastic tray rattling around inside it. Two-tier versions double the capacity of a single drawer.
- A pull-out spice rack or a shallow spice drawer near the cooktop, with the labels facing up so you can read them.
- Tray and baking sheet dividers, vertical slots for trays, boards, and sheet pans, usually above a wall oven or in a narrow filler cabinet. This solves a problem every kitchen has.
- A corner solution. Blind corner cabinets are the single biggest waste of space in most kitchens. A pull-out corner unit or a well-made lazy susan reclaims a substantial volume you are currently not using.
- Pull-out pantry units, tall narrow slides with shelving on both faces, which make every item visible instead of stacking three deep.
- A knife block insert in a drawer, which is safer than a countertop block and clears the counter.
- Under-sink organisers shaped around the plumbing, plus a tilt-out tray at the sink front for sponges.
Fittings That Are Usually Not Worth It
An honest counterweight, because these are heavily upsold:
- Appliance lifts that swing a mixer up from a base cabinet. Impressive in a showroom, heavy, expensive, and most people stop using them.
- Elaborate pull-down wall cabinet mechanisms. Costly, and they reduce the usable volume of the cabinet.
- Too many fixed specialty inserts. Every insert dedicates space to one purpose forever. A few adjustable dividers are more useful over a decade than a rack built for one specific thing.
- Toe-kick drawers in most households. Fine if you genuinely need somewhere for flat trays, but usually a novelty.
Deciding which of these belong in your kitchen depends entirely on how you cook and what you own. Talk it through with Ember Works and we will specify the interiors around your actual habits rather than a catalogue list.
Hardware Quality Is Not a Detail
The runners and hinges are the moving parts of your kitchen, opened and closed tens of thousands of times. This is not a place to save money.
- Full-extension runners so the drawer comes all the way out. Three-quarter extension leaves the back of every drawer permanently awkward.
- Undermount soft-close runners, which are hidden beneath the drawer box, carry more weight, and stop the slamming.
- Weight ratings that match the use. A pan drawer or a pull-out pantry loaded with tins needs heavier runners than a cutlery drawer.
- Solid drawer boxes. Dovetailed plywood or solid timber boxes outlast stapled particleboard by decades, and the drawer box is the part that fails first in a cheap kitchen.
- Soft-close hinges throughout, adjustable in three directions so doors can be aligned properly at installation and realigned later.
Plan the Inside Before You Order
The important practical point: interior fittings are not accessories you add later. Drawer configurations, pull-out widths, and corner solutions are all built into the cabinet order, and changing them afterwards usually means new cabinets. The time to decide is when the kitchen is being drawn, alongside the appliances.
A useful exercise before that meeting: empty a couple of your current cabinets onto the counter and look at what you actually own. Most households discover they need more drawer space and less wall cabinet space than they assumed, and that several cabinets are storing things they have not used in years.
The Money You Feel Every Day
Nobody visiting your home will comment on your drawer runners. You will notice them every morning. Of all the places to spend in a kitchen remodel, the interiors return the most in daily use per dollar, and they are the hardest thing to change afterwards.
