Flooring Face-Off: Hardwood, Engineered, Vinyl Plank, and Tile

Published October 22nd, 2026 by Ember Works

Flooring is the largest continuous surface in your home and one of the few finishes that has to satisfy appearance, durability, comfort, moisture resistance, and budget all at once. It is also the decision where the marketing is loudest and the honest comparisons are hardest to find.

Here is a straight assessment of the four options we install most in Rochester homes, including where each one genuinely fails.

Solid Hardwood

What it is: solid boards of timber, typically three quarters of an inch thick, nailed to a subfloor.

  • Strengths: it is the benchmark for a reason. It can be sanded and refinished multiple times across a very long life, so it is effectively renewable. It suits Rochester's older homes because it is what they were built with. It adds real resale value, and buyers here specifically look for it.
  • Weaknesses: it moves with humidity. Our long dry heating season followed by humid summers means seasonal gapping and expansion is normal, not a defect, and running a humidifier in winter genuinely helps. It dents, it does not tolerate standing water, and it is not suitable below grade.
  • Where it belongs: living areas, bedrooms, halls, dining rooms, and kitchens if you accept that spills need attention.

Engineered Hardwood

What it is: a real hardwood wear layer bonded over a plywood core. Not laminate, not a photograph, genuine wood on top.

  • Strengths: the cross-layered core is far more dimensionally stable than solid wood, so it handles humidity swings and radiant heat better. It can be installed over concrete and below grade, which solid wood cannot. It comes in wider planks that would be unstable in solid form, and it can be prefinished with very durable factory coatings.
  • Weaknesses: the wear layer determines how many times it can be refinished, and cheap products with a thin veneer can be refinished once or not at all. This is the specification that matters most and the one that is easiest to overlook.
  • Where it belongs: anywhere solid wood goes, plus basements and over slabs and radiant heat. For a Rochester basement that you want to feel like the rest of the house, this is often the answer.

Luxury Vinyl Plank

What it is: a multi-layer synthetic plank with a printed image layer and a clear wear layer, usually rigid-core in the better products.

  • Strengths: genuinely waterproof, which nothing else on this list can claim. Very tough against scratches, dents, pets, and children. Warmer and quieter underfoot than tile. Straightforward to install and considerably cheaper than wood. The good products look far better than the category's reputation suggests.
  • Weaknesses: it cannot be refinished, so when the wear layer goes, it is replaced rather than restored. Quality varies enormously and the cheap end looks cheap, with obvious repeating patterns. It can dent under heavy point loads and it can discolour in strong direct sunlight. It does not add resale value the way real wood does, and in a period Rochester home it can read as wrong.
  • Where it belongs: basements, mudrooms, laundry rooms, kitchens in busy family homes, and rentals. For a Rochester basement on a budget it is hard to beat.

Porcelain and Ceramic Tile

What it is: fired clay, with porcelain being denser, harder, and less porous than ceramic.

  • Strengths: the most durable and most water-resistant option. It is effectively permanent, immune to moisture, and the only sensible choice in a shower. Modern large-format porcelain convincingly imitates stone and wood. It is the natural partner for heated floors.
  • Weaknesses: cold and hard underfoot, which in our climate is a real consideration unless you add radiant heat. Unforgiving to dropped glassware. Grout needs maintenance. Installation is skilled work and the substrate must be rigid, or tiles crack. Heavy, which occasionally matters on older framing.
  • Where it belongs: bathrooms, mudrooms, laundry rooms, and entries. In a Rochester mudroom taking salt and slush for five months, tile with heat underneath is close to ideal.

How to Actually Choose

Work room by room rather than picking one product for the whole house:

  • Anywhere below grade: engineered wood, luxury vinyl, or tile. Not solid hardwood.
  • Anywhere that gets wet: tile or luxury vinyl.
  • Anywhere with heavy salt and grit traffic: tile, ideally heated.
  • Period rooms in an older home: solid or engineered hardwood, matched to what is already there.
  • Over radiant heat: tile or engineered wood, checking the product is rated for it.

Two things people underestimate. First, transitions matter: running the same or visually compatible flooring across connected sightlines makes a house feel larger, while a change of material at every doorway chops it up. Second, the subfloor decides the outcome. Older Rochester homes rarely have flat, level subfloors, and no flooring performs over a deflecting or uneven base. Levelling and stiffening is the unglamorous line item that determines whether the finished floor is right.

If you are weighing options across several rooms, that is worth planning as one decision. Talk to Ember Works about your flooring and we will look at the subfloor as well as the surface.

Choose for the Room, Not the Trend

There is no single best floor. There is the right floor for a below-grade family room, a different one for a mudroom that sees road salt, and a different one again for a 1920s dining room. Match the material to the conditions and you will not think about it again for decades.
